Harvest News 2009
Harvest is finally slowing down and the weather is turning very cold. The harvest was very compressed this year with Marlborough and Waipara fruit ripening at the same time. This allowed the winemaking crew to work on the whites and then reds, but it did make things very busy indeed!! The general feeling this harvest is that it has been one of the best ever….”Wicked” as said by Matt Elrick (Assistant Winemaker). The fruit was magnificent this year with the Pinot Noir being the stand out. 2009 should be an excellent vintage. The overseas crew members have been outstanding and have been a great asset in the winery. Julien ( France) has been playing rugby for Glenmark to add flavour to his “New Zealand” experience. Aurora ( France) still looks askance at New Zealand cheddar with a twinkle in her eye. Cecilia (Germany), our Mittelrhein Riesling expert, is doing her thing!! Jamie (Christchurch), having returned for yet another vintage experience, still ends up shovelling out Pinot Noir fermenters and buzzing around on the forklift, always with a smile!! Jason has done a wonderful job managing the cellar with wine coming in and going out at a frantic pace. Dayne and Jill Sherwood are off to the USA today and then on to the UK where they will join Mark Jones at the London Wine Show. It should be a very interesting show.
