Friday 29 May Notes

French Wines

The Rhone Valley

Situated in the Rhone river valley in southern France

Two sub regions Northern and Southern Rhone

In the North the red wine is made from Syrah and white is from the Viognier grape

The North’s most famous wines come from Cote-Rotie

In the South the blends can have up to 13 varieties of grapes but mainly Grenache Syrah Mourvedre Carignan and Cinsault

Most famous wine of the South is Chateauneuf-du-Pape

A good introduction to the Rhone is to buy a Cotes du Rhone which is generally from the South and will be a blend of the above grapes

They are available from most specialist wine retailers and even some supermarkets expect to pay around $20.00 for a Cotes du Rhone
