French Wines continued

Burgundy (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay)

Pinot Noir from Waipara’s Black Estate wins the Christchurch Casino tasting

All NZ wine regions produce Pinot Noir they vary from region to region

French Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

The home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is Burgundy in France they produce the worlds best examples of these two varietals

Located in eastern France the main part of Burgundy is referred to as the Cote d’Or  this is where the  most famous and expensive of Burgundy’s wines are produced they can cost up to many hundreds even thousands of dollars per bottle

However there are cheaper ways to taste Burgundy starting with the wines of Chablis in the north which produce lightly oaked chardonnay with refreshing mineral characters

Also try the wines further south of the Cote d’Or but still in Burgundy from Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais

Remember the French generally don’t label their wines with the grape variety so look out for Burgundy which will mean you will be drinking Pinot Noir if red and Chardonnay if white

Most wine retailers will stock Burgundy wine and should be able to point you to the cheaper starting Burgundies but even these wont be cheap expect to start at around $30 for a good introduction to Burgundy
