Dayne & Jill Sherwood
Since 1987
Dayne and Jill Sherwood are the founders and owners of Sherwood Estate Wines. They started the company in 1987 when few people in New Zealand fully understood the wine industry, including them. Together they have built the company from a small 20-acre block in North Canterbury to one of New Zealand's largest family-owned and independent wineries. They oversee all operations from planting to delivery. Dayne’s passion for wine began in university, and Jill joined him in founding Sherwood Estate Wines in 1987.
Surplus to success
The New Zealand wine industry was flourishing, and wine consumption was up. However, a surplus led to a market crash, forcing some wineries to close or merge. Despite this, Jill and Dayne persevered, planting more vines, including the then-unpopular Pinot Noir. Dayne believed in New Zealand’s potential to produce world-class Pinot Noir. Their efforts paid off, earning recognition for their wines both locally and internationally.
Expanding horizons
Their West Melton vineyards and winery reached capacity, prompting Jill and Dayne to move Sherwood Estate to the Waipara Valley. Over nearly 20 years, they expanded to 3 vineyards and a custom-built winery, now bustling with activity. Chief Winemaker Petter Evans leads a growing team. Jill and Dayne remain hands-on, overseeing production and traveling to meet partners and customers. Dayne often works in the vineyards, while Jill manages the administrative side. Outside work, Dayne enjoys cooking and gardening, and Jill loves tennis and the outdoors. They've raised two sons, with the youngest pursuing viticulture and oenology. Their love for wine drives their success, aiming to share their passion with customers.
